MBYC – SAILING SECTION

PRESIDENTS REPORT NOV-DEC 2011

Well the end of another year which saw some of us facing a strong headwind and others a following breeze, hope it was a good year for you, where did it go?

Looking back since my last report here is what has been happening.

I will start with our club signature event the interclub Fairway Challenge including a new event the Pearl Challenge which sails a shorter course.

These events received high praise from visiting skippers with positive feedback for the professional manner in which these events were managed by our club and also the generous prizes on offer.

The morning of the race started with a forecast of storm fronts and winds gusting to 40 knots. This made for a difficult decision for the committee as the original forecast was for light winds. After a postponement the race got away to a good start by all divisions.

By the time the fleet had reached M3 the boats were becalmed and being pushed back by the incoming tide. God is not a yachty! This fickle weather made for a long night for the Fairway Challenge competitors with the majority not getting to the finish until the early hours of the morning. My sail aboard Mojo in the Pearl Challenge ended with a lovely sail under the full moon finishing at around 9.30pm

There was a lot of organization involved in running the two challenges in the one year and it was with a great sigh of relief that things returned to normal and the events ran without to much drama involved.

SAGS:

With the withdrawal of sponsorship by Australia Wide Yachts Sales due to restructuring their business and opening a new office interstate . We were very fortunate that the sponsorship for our Rum Races has been taken up by Anita and the crew from Farine Boat Sales who have also kindly offered to sponsor other events. This is much appreciated as we all love our Rum Race.

We would like to thank Jeff Rowe for his sponsorship in the past and wish him well in his new venture in NSW.

The club has run two Summer Series championship races with this series to continue in the New Year.

Our last event of the year the Bexbrook was well supported despite a strong wind seeing most boats well reefed which made for a difficult task to answer the trivia questions devised by Allan McKlintock. Prizes for the various categories were presented at a free Bar-B-que on the lawns after the race and we would like to thank the sponsors of the event Bexbrook Computers and also Allan for the trivia questions.

I know the entire club wish the best of luck to our members sailing on Samurai Jack heading down to Hobart in the big race, think they would have had a tough first night. Hope they managed to keep the Christmas pud down.

When out on the water the MBBC is holding the 420 dinghy state titles so give them plenty of room and a friendly wave and if you have the time the club could do with your help.

MBYC PRESIDENTS REPORT - AUGUST SEPTEMBER 2011

We are now well into our 2011-2012 sailing year after completing the past season with our presentation evening at MBBC a great evening featuring a black and white theme, good food and entertainment and the venue expertly decorated by our new committee member Kim Dowdney, we also held an auction run by Doug Aitcheson to benefit the MBBC.

Through good fiscal management by our past treasurer and generous sponsor support we can again offer very low membership fees for this new season.

I would like to welcome new members to our committee.

Will Fraser as treasurer, Hank Kaufman as principal race officer, Kim Dowdney public relations,

Michael Mc Mahon as webmaster, Andy Dupreez as YQ representative.

Mike O'halloran has moved to club handicapper, Nick Bruin to sags and wags coordinator, Jane Dupreez to property officer.

Thank you to Nigel Bucknell , JVP, Bill Goodward, Chris Howell who are standing down for this season for there contribution last season.

COWAN RACE:

Our first major race for the year the Cowan marathon was hampered by light conditions with division one cancelled and to be run another day.

SCARBOROUGH CLASSIC BOAT RACE: sponsored by Scarborough Marina.

The event was held on the same weekend as the power boat racing and the world water ski championships as well as the Redcliffe festival. A weekend of good weather only hampered by smoke from many grassfires filling our bay with smoke and restricting visability which did not lift for a week.

Championship Race one

The first of our championship races has been held in quite challenging conditions with strong winds but Synchronicity won the day after a long absence due to keel modifications.

Sags & Wags

Still as popular as ever the low key racing appeals to many of our members including myself . Unfortunately during our last Rum race Rimfire after finishing was caught unaware when a strong gust of wind hit turning the boat on its side. After an anxious night a professional salvage team was able to retrieve her and return her home. We wish Merv and Marlene good luck with her repairs.

FAIRWAY CHALLENGE: PEARL CHALLENGE:

This is an anual event which we all looking forward to running on the 8th of October rescheduled to coincide with a full moon and includes a new event the Pearl Challenge for smaller boats. Shona Lawrie our tireless secretary has completed most of the work to run this event and our club is fortunate for the amount of work Shona puts in to the job as our secretary.

It is good to see the amount of member support and good management and resurrection of the bay news to keep every one informed of events at the Morton Bay Boat Club

Presidents report June - July   2011

Dear Members of MBYC sailing branch.
We are now back to normal weather sailing conditions which at the moment we are experiencing sunny winter days which is why we live in Qeensland
.
Our sags wags , rum race is experiencing increasing numbers with our last rum race numbers getting well over thirty boats competting with every one enjoying after race celebrations at MBBC.

Championship series. The series of four races was an interesting series with most positions changing in every race so we look forward to presenting trophy's at presentation for each race and over all 2011 champion.

Sail Trim and Weather forum
This would have been one of the most successful nights our club has experienced where Hank Kaufman gave away some of his sailing secrets and knowledge on sail trim and weather as a Marine architect and glider pilot. Hank has promised us another night on yacht design and our club is fortunate to have Hank and Lorain as members of our club.

Winter series
The first of our winter series races has been run with a good size fleet with the second race this coming Sunday.

Single handed skippers race.
Again a strong number of entrants but frustrating light winds with a course planned to Pearl Chanel , Garnett rock and return to home but even with a shortened course only two boats finished first Dream Lover second Outside edge. Boats to sail the course but not finish by sunset . Party time, Dream , Mojo, Nice try, Moonshine,Go again.

This event was dominated by MBYC boats.

Planing is already under way for next seasons sailing calender which will offer a few surpriseses as well as the new date in October for our signature event the Fairway challenge.
Our first event will be the Cowan challenge to promote Cowan base and sharpen your skills for the F/C.

We are coming to the end of the 2010-2011 sailing season with a great night planed for our Sailors Annual celebration presentation night on Saturday 23rd July. This will be a smart casual dress with the dress theme to wear black and white. So all members please come along for I promise a great night with good entertainment, food and interesting prizes along with a generous door prize offered by Scarborough harbour Marina John Paul Mira.

Shortly after on Tuesday 2nd August will be our AGM where all office positions will be become vacant and nominations will be considered for all positions for the 2011-2012 sailing season. So if you have the time it will be a rewarding experience where new ideas are always welcome.
I have been fortunate for the commitment put in during the past year by an exceptional committee and have enjoyed working with all committee members to bring an enjoyable and safe year of sailing and pleasure.

Presidents Report April May 2011

Dear members of MBYC Sailing Section

May I start this report by thanking all the members who have given up their time to help run our busy calender of sailing events. This would also include help given to kindred clubs with assistance for their events. This has taken many forms from laying buoys to cooking at barbecues and assisting boats into pens in the middle of the night just to name a few tasks.

Our club is fortunate to also have the support of great sponsors.

I hope all members enjoyed the Easter break if racing ,cruising travelling or relaxing at home.

Starting with the Industrial Plastics Ron Howell Memorial Mud Island race. A great turn out of 23 boats with fantastic weather.

The QCYC Surf to City was called off this year because of inclement weather.

Our clubs signature event the Inter Club Ocean Fairway Challenge proved successful again this year but our committee feels that being a night event would be better run during a time of a full moon and more favourable tides and also plan to run a coarse in protected waters for smaller boats and make this event bigger and better, so we are running another fairway challenge again this year to reestablish a new date with the race to be run again on Saturday the eighth October 2011.

The Weekly Sags and Wags still proves to attract strong numbers with up to thirty boats in the Monthly rum race with enjoyable after race celebrations at the MBBC.

Six MBYC boats took part in the race. Jackpot, Samurai Jack,Dream, Midnight oil, Dream Lover, Euphoria 11.

It has been a busy sailing period over the last few months and along with the kingfisher series presentation and qld trailable series races, sailing has contributed to keep the MBBC. Very busy with reports of good service by the boat club staff.

Presidents Report: FEBRUARY, 2011

Dear members of MBYC Sailing Section

The Christmas and New Year is now well past and we are now back to planning our sailing year for 2011. The unprecedented past weather that we have experienced has thrown our sailing calendar as well as other kindred clubs into disarray with all clubs having to reschedule there planed races and events.

However this has been a small price to pay compared to those who have lost their property and or lives in the devastating floods and our hearts go out to them.

Series 2 race 2 of our championship series was won by Graham and Shona Lawries Midnight Oil with Mike O’Halloran Eclipse leading the series to date by the slimmest of margins.

Our next major event is the Industrial Plastics Ron Howell Memorial Mud Island race which will be held on Sunday the 27feb.

Following will be the Annual Surf to City yacht race held by [QCYC] postponed this year to Saturday 5^th march.

This will be followed by our signature event for the year our interclub Fairway Challenge sponsored by Voyager Gaming Technologies and Morgans Seafood with help from MBBC and Australian Volunteer Coastguard which will be held on Saturday 12^th March.

There is plenty of sailing for all members so please make the effort and try as many of the events organized for you which are designed to get the most enjoyment from your boat including our Wags and Sags ,Fats racing sponsored by Australia Wide Yacht Sales, Saxby Sails UK Halsey, MBBC, Grotti Yoti Clothing.

As president representing all of our members we welcome and congratulate the new board of the MBBC and look forward to working with them and helping support the Morton Bay Boat Club.

Presidents Report: DECEMBER, 2010

Dear members of MBYC Sailing Section

As president I wish all our members a Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous new year in 2011.

Our last event was the Bexbrook trophy fun race with the theme being a pirate burgular or thief.

The captain of the event was Captain Dave Meaton with partner in crime Greg Hamilton owner of ‘Double D’

The winner of the Bexbrook trophy who was judged the biggest cheat, sorry burglar was awarded to Wee Barkie which looked lovely under sail and suited the look of the pirate era.

The best dressed boat went to Midnight Oil. The pirate trivia contest went to Cat Balou and they capped it off by winning a prize for the best dittie with there sterling rendition of Cat Balou.

Savant won the dash to the first mark. Various other prizes were given at the discretion of the captain of the day for any thing and everything and gave us all a good laugh. We were lucky to enjoy a fun bar-b-que sponsored by the club just before the heavens opened up with a monster deluge.

Our club championship is now well under way with OD Nick Bruin in first place. Nice Try was second for Trevor Anger and Page 111 Daryl Wright third. OD did not win a race but sailed the most consistent to win. Series two is well under way with Eclipse Mike O’Haloran winning the first race. Race two was called off because of lack of wind and heavy rain and will be re scheduled for 2011. The overallseries can still be won by several outher boats who are still well in contention.

Our Sags and Wags fleets are still strong with our most popular event being our monthly Australia Wide Yacht Sales rum race. Our monthly Grotti Yotti clothing prize is also proving very popular.

The organizing of the next main event coming up for the MBYC is the Fairway inter club challenge with most of the organizing completed but we will be looking for volunteers to help run the event on the allotted week end so please let me know if you can help.

Our club has also approached Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron for a limited use of their excellent club facility at Canaipa on Russell island which includes a swimming pool , barbecue facilities and toilet and shower facilities and we are waiting for a response from them.
